Human papilomavirus by Alejandro Acosta
Human papilomavirus (HPV) is a highly common is our modern society, is even said that everyone in one point of their life gets this disease and its the most common sexual transmitted infection. There can be several causes and and places where it can express mostly on the skin and/or in mucous membranes and most of the people don't noticed it because is and asyntomatic disease and the beginning .
But first we should understand why HPV is considered a virus, the reason is because its a very infectious and replicates inside living cells of other organisms. Is generally cause when you have a cut in your skin,"abrasion or small tear in the outer layer of your skin" and they enter in contact with the virus. And there two other ways first when having sexual intercourses the skin of the region gets infected, having oral sex also does spread the infection and it can compromise "oral and upper respiratory lesions". The last way that someone can get infected is a women gives birth to a child and she has the disease, the baby has a very big change of also getting it either in the genital, respiratory system or any lesion of the body.
In the other hand although HPV is so common, the consequences caused by this virus are sever and can even cause death. As said before most of the people don't notice they are sick because HPV is asymtomatic and the beginning, what does this mean? You wont be able to tell if you have the disease until is developed enough to show symptoms. Normally it can cause genital warts which are basically bumps in the skin of the genital area also it even though is more rarely cases in which patients develop warts in their throats. Normally after some time the immune system heals the warts this happens in the 90% of times but when it doesn't the virus cause that the normal cells turn into abnormal cells causing cancer in the affected area this includes genital are oral sex related parts of the body, if the throat is affected it might cause difficult when breathing. The type of cancer related to human papilomavirus is known as "cervical cancer" it doesn't express any symptoms until is too late, is very difficult to treat and expensive.
Now regarding treatments, if you test positive with HPV there is a good change you wont need any treatment because your immune system get rid of the infection in around 2 years, but is important that you check permanently because if it doesn't heal is possible abnormal cell appear causing cancer, but still in this point there are treatments such as wait because sometimes the body clear the precancerous cells and in this case you will save a lot of money. Cryotherapy is around 170US dollars a week and the treatment last three week, the objective of this treatment is to freeze the warts with nitrogen. Conization and is removing the affected areas and the cost may vary between 530 to 2,500 dollar depending if its done in an physicians office or in ambulatory surgery center. The last treatment is "LEEP" and " the abnormal cells are removed with an electrical current" and cost between 700 to 1500 dollars. All the procedure are around the same cost which is not really very expensive but the problem lays when the abnormals cell keep on reappearing and the procedure have to be done multiply times, and from a economical point of view is really expensive. That way is highly recommended to get the HPV vaccine before getting the disease to reduce the changes of getting it.
Regarding the social implications this do also affect the psychological stability of the patient, studies had shown that the people diagnosed with this infection they psychological tests show stress, sadness and anxiety cause of the possibility of getting cancer, not only their sexual life slow down but they interact less with other people including family, many parents and friend use the "i told you so" expression because the chance of the patient getting cancer is low, but this causes the feel of guilt which distance them even more. Normally people with HPV lie about having the disease because they are afraid of being judge by others about their sexual intercourses. Human papilomavirus also help destroy many relationship because in most of the cases the patient had being in a relationship and the pattern doesn't have the disease the first thought is infidelity that in most cases in accurate.
In conclusion human papilomavirus it's very common but also easy to avoid or at least lower the chance of getting it. Mostly its not very harmful but it can get to the point of being deadly by highly increasing the chance of developing cancer, regarding the treatment they are not very expensive if your are cure in the expected time, if not it turns incredibly expensive because turns it a continues expense. But the worst part a part from the chance of dying is the psychological aftermath and the distancing of the society. Finally don't take your change an apply the HPV vaccine.
